Meet Jane Ross
Chanana Designs is a Custom Heirloom Sewing and Design Company, specializing in elegant Christening Gowns and Suits, Portrait or Party Dresses, Bonnets, and other heirloom items. I became interested in recreating antique gowns and heirloom sewing techniques about 5 years ago. I taught myself through books, magazines and I studied with Martha Pullen, a world renowned Heirloom sewing educator.
My business started in October 2002 out of my home on a very part time basis. I teach heirloom sewing classes and sell items here and there. The art of heirloom sewing is my passion, so my business is a joy to own and operate.
My goal is to create one of a kind gowns and other heirloom items to be cherished by families and passed down from generation to generation. As more of society begins to research their ancestors, they are finding antique garments in tatters or damaged. Imagine how exciting it would be to purchase a new gown to last for another 200 years. That new gown or slip could have the family history embroidered on it creating a customized treasure.
Our garments are made from the finest batiste, linens and silks imported from around the world. Exquisite French laces and Swiss embroideries adorn our gowns. To make an Heirloom item I start with material and piles of lace. I create a piece of fabric with embroidery (hand and/or machine), lace shaping, gimping, beading, smocking, ribbons and more. The article of clothing I use it in is determined by how the fabric turns out. It could be used in a Christening Gown or suit, a portrait dress, pillow, quilt square or anything else I can imagine. I then cut out the pattern and sew it together, by hand, machine or both. Each garment is a one of a kind item, sewn with fine fabrics and laces that will last a lifetime.
